The Rosary

Rosary

The Rosary is one of the most popular and powerful Catholic prayer traditions. The name of this prayer is inspired by a garland of roses, the flower that symbolizes the Virgin Mary.

Prayed with a beaded cord, the Rosary is a collection of prayers, including the Apostles’ Creed, the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be. The prayers are grouped into five decades, each attached to a mystery in the life of Jesus.

What may appear to be simple repetitive prayer is actually an effective scriptural meditation since the mysteries of the Rosary, along with the prayers that are recited, come predominantly from the Bible.

While praying the Rosary, Catholics mediate on twenty critical events in the life of Jesus with his mother. These mysteries are the heart of the Rosary and are grouped into four categories of five each: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious.

The Joyful Mysteries are the happy events in the early life of Jesus. These are the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Birth of Jesus, the Presentation at the Temple, and Finding Jesus in the Temple.

In the Luminous Mysteries, Catholics reflect on when Jesus revealed Himself as God at his Baptism by John in the Jordan River, the Wedding at Cana, Preaching about the Kingdom, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Holy Eucharist.

The Sorrowful Mysteries recall the tragic episodes of Jesus’ Passion beginning with the Agony in the Garden, followed by the Scourging at the Pillar, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying the Cross, and ending with his Crucifixion and Death.

The Glorious Mysteries highlight the victorious events of Jesus’ Resurrection, his Ascension into Heaven, the Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth.

Our need of divine help is as great today as when the great Dominic introduced the use of the Rosary of Mary as a balm for the wounds of his contemporaries. That great saint indeed, divinely enlightened, perceived that no remedy would be more adapted to the evils of his time than that men should return to Christ, Who “is the way, the truth, and the life,” by frequent meditation on the salvation obtained for us by Him, and should seek the intercession with God of that Virgin, to whom it is given to destroy all heresies. He therefore so composed the Rosary as to recall the mysteries of our salvation in succession, and the subject of meditation is mingled and, as it were, interlaced with the Angelic salutation and with the prayer addressed to God, the Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ

“All generations will call me blessed”: “The Church’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship.” The Church rightly honors “the Blessed Virgin with special devotion. From the most ancient times the Blessed Virgin has been honored with the title of ‘Mother of God,’ to whose protection the faithful fly in all their dangers and needs. . . . This very special devotion . . . differs essentially from the adoration which is given to the incarnate Word and equally to the Father and the Holy Spirit, and greatly fosters this adoration.” The liturgical feasts dedicated to the Mother of God and Marian prayer, such as the Rosary, an “epitome of the whole Gospel,” express this devotion to the Virgin Mary.
