The Holy Bible is a collection of books authored by God to reveal Himself and his plan to man.
Originally written down over centuries by various men from different locations and in their native languages, the Catholic Church oversaw the translation and collection of this Sacred Scripture into one holy book.
The Old Testament consists of 46 books beginning with the story of Creation and then following God’s chosen people over centuries as they wait for the promised Savior of the World.
The 27 books of the New Testament begin with events leading up to the Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ and continues with writings from the early Church after his death and Resurrection.
The Bible is necessary for studying and teaching about God and is an important part of the Church’s liturgy.

A key concept for understanding the sacred text as the Word of God in human words is certainly that of inspiration. Here too we can suggest an analogy: as the Word of God became flesh by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary, so sacred Scripture is born from the womb of the Church by the power of the same Spirit. Sacred Scripture is “the Word of God set down in writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit”. In this way one recognizes the full importance of the human author who wrote the inspired texts and, at the same time, God himself as the true author.
